Control Towers

Like many Singaporeans, I grew up knowing Singapore Changi Airport through the iconic control tower and had always wondered if there were people up there. If there were, what did they do there?

As it turns out, years later I found out what they did up in the control cabin. The hubs and I met up in the cabin of an air traffic control tower, when I was training to become a rated aerodrome controller. For this very reason, control towers have always been special to us. It isn’t always easy, but we’ve made it a point to capture the air traffic control towers of airports we depart from/arrive into during our travels.

A lot of these pictures were obviously taken indoors in the airport terminal or enroute in buses, often through tinted glass windows. The colours do turn out looking kinda weird, but we had to make the best out of the situation.

You’d think that a control tower can only look like a tower, right? After all, how different can they look? Apparently, very. We’ve seen quite a few control towers, and they really did come in different shapes and sizes although my biased self will always think that Changi’s control tower look the handsomest. 😆
